Hiatus Kaiyote, Great Earthquake + The Harpoons Live // PBS Drive Live

My friends at PBS asked me to come in and photograph Hiatus Kaiyote, Great Earthquake and The Harpoons as they performed live on air for the station’s Drive Live week.

I love my job.

Grammy nominated Hiatus Kaiyote are arguably the most exciting band to come out of Melbourne in the last few years. Praised by such RnB/Soul gods as Erykah Badu and Questlove (The Roots), this insanely talented four piece’s soulful tunes (and singer Nai Palm’s sultry vocals) are truly minblowing. If you haven’t heard them yet, get out from under that rock and do your ears a favour.

The lineup also introduced me to Great Earthquake, a one-man-loop-pedal-machine, layering all manner of instruments to create some awesome and complex rhythms; and The Harpoons – a smooth toned RnB/Soul act extremely worth your time.

Juan Pablo Hernández Forero Amazing photos. Is incredible to perceive the intimacy of the elaboration of an artistic fact. Hiatus talent doesn’t have roof.

Ellie + Ollie // Relaxed Edinburgh Gardens and Pope Joan Wedding // Melbourne

How to have a stress free, awesome wedding, a la Ellie + Ollie:

1. Different Hotels? No. Get up and get ready and head out together.

2. Have your portrait session first – travelling through the sites of your first date. First stop: Edinburgh Gardens and the surrounding streets, then the Tin Pot Cafe. *May include visit from male nuns holding beers.

3. Head to the Pinnacle for a beer with your besties.

4. Back to the gardens for a quick, fun ceremony. *May include appearance from a massive curious black dog.

5. Last stop – Pope Joan. Eat excellent food, drink lots of beer, have Ritchie 1250 from PBS spin classic soul tunes, and dance the night away.

And that’s how it’s done.

Ellie + Ollie are absolute legends. The right things mattered on the day – good company, great times, no stress. I loved this wedding, and am lucky to have met such an awesome couple (and their excellent friends and family).

Special mention needs to be made of Ellie’s incredible bouquet – the work of master flower rangler Petra at Pomp and Splendour. YES.

Thanks to John Possemato for his assistance.

Eva Slonim Editorial // Dumbo Feather Magazine

Being a photographer allows me to help tell people’s fascinating stories. It’s an incredible honour, and continues to blow me away with each new opportunity.

Dumbo Feather is a magazine like no other. Free from ‘What’s Hot’ lists, pointless celebrity gossip and high fashion advertising, this is a magazine you hold on to for life. Each issue profiles a handful of inspiring people; from all walks of life, all ages, all nationalities. The main connection is their drive to make things better… for their family, their community, their country or the world. Each subject has a fascinating story to tell, and each story fills the reader with inspiration and warmth.

Recently I was asked to visit Eva Slonim – an 82 year old holocaust survivor and long-time educator within Australian Jewish communities – to capture some portraits around her home. The photographs were to accompany a brilliant profile piece by writer Oscar Schwartz.

The article and portraits can be seen in Issue 38 of Dumbo Feather, on shelves in good retailers this week. You can also subscribe online here. You won’t regret it.
