‘SPAIN ON FILM’ PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – March 2015 // The CCP, Adelaide

Fb-Button

For the first time in many years, I’m exhibiting some personal work – the medium format series ‘SPAIN ON FILM’. Captured on a Yashica Twin Lens Reflex, the series depicts the various streets, characters, landscapes and light I encountered on a two week road trip across the country last year.

The exhibition runs from March 4th – April 8th. The gallery hours are as follows:
Monday–Thursday 9am–5pm
Friday 9am–5pm
Saturday 10am–3pm

The Light Gallery at the Centre for Creative Photography
138 Richmond Road, Marleston SA

Special thanks to my friends at Thirds Fine Art Printing, Mike Lim and Aaron Blake for their invaluable help in putting this show together.

“Lucy has focussed her deliberate gaze to isolate views of Spain and its environs… No. 11 with the crucifix and clouds which shroud the mountain, only to draw back in No. 20 to reveal the full splendorous scene – details which punctuate this exhibition regularly throughout; the church spire rising behind the wall in Alhambra in Seville in No. 3; the man reading his newspaper in the light in No. 6; the isolated light playing over the floor on the room in No 16; a fabulous exercise in physical dynamism as seen in a public space with No. 15…

This type of exhibition rewards the scrutiny of the viewer which the medium format camera records with impunity. The prints are lustrous and maintain the integrity of the medium of film which to this day is still superior to the digital file.

Lucy, I’ve seen you grow from afar since you left the CCP in 2008 and Adelaide for Melbourne in 2009… you’ve got eyes. You are always honing your vision and changing the dynamic of how you photograph, yet with this exhibition you have reminded us and yourself where you have come from. The pacing of the show is wonderful and it flows gracefully around this gallery.

Congratulations, it’s my pleasure to be a part of this latest offering from you.” – From the opening speech from Gavin Blake, founder of the Centre for Creative Photography.

Alastair and I recently returned from a road trip through Spain (after shooting a spectacular wedding in Portugal – coming soon to the blog).  In what turned out to be the best decision I’ve made in a long time, I borrowed a Yashica Mat 124G from my friend Jason Lau, filled my bag with Kodak Tri-X and Ilford HP5 film, and set off to document our adventure the old fashioned way. I only wonder why it took me this long to rekindle my love of the analogue process.

Back at Photography school I shot film almost exclusively, but for the last 6 years I’ve worked only with digital. Getting back to this shooting style is like blissful photo-therapy; a chance to slow down, look, think, and make careful decisions at a steady pace.

Limited fine art prints available for purchase – contact me for a price list.
